In a commendable nod to the power of online activism, the Minister of ICT and National Guidance, Dr Chris Baryomunsi, has lauded the efforts of online activists spearheading the ongoing exhibitions aimed at unveiling corruption and mismanagement of public funds within the Parliament.
Bryomunsi, who was addressing the press at the Uganda Media Centre on Wednesday, said such online campaigns must be driven by genuine desire to address accountability issues.
"I would like to commend the people behind the exhibitions that are exposing corruption in parliament and other government bodies, the ongoing protests must be driven by a genuine desire to address issues of accountability and transparency, rather than being fueled by political agendas," Baryomunsi said.
Responding to inquiries regarding Cabinet discussions on the matter, Dr Baryomunsi clarified that the issue had not yet been tabled in Cabinet.
However, he assured the public that pertinent agencies responsible for combating corruption, such as the Inspector General of Government (IGG) and the Auditor General, have been entrusted with investigating the allegations raised within the August House.
"IGG, Auditor General, and others should be given adequate time to conduct thorough investigations, and they will undoubtedly wield the necessary authority to hold those involved in corruption accountable," Asserted Baryomunsi
The minister's comments come amidst a growing tide of public outcry exhibited in the ongoing parliament exhibitions over alleged financial impropriety within legislative institution.
The online exhibitions, organized by vigilant activists such as lawyer Godwin Toko, Dr Jim Spire Sentongo, a Makerere University lecturer and satirist and journalist, lawyer and human rights activist Agather Atuhaire, have served as a catalyst for increased scrutiny and demand for transparency in parliament.
