A fire that gutted the boys’ dormitory at Kasaana Junior School in Masaka City left two pupils dead and 10 others seriously injured.
The deceased have been identified as Aloysius Ahebwa and Malik Katende.
According to the southern Regional Police Commander Jamaada Wandera the affected dormitory accommodated 15 pupils of Top class and P.1.
“Based on our assessment, the probable cause of the fire was a short circuit where the matron Christine Adongo who is also in a critical condition could have put a phone charging,” Wandera said.
The Regional Police Commander said the injured pupils have been admitted to Kiruddu hospital in Kampala where they were evacuated after initially being admitted to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital.
“ We have been able to transfer nine children to Kiruddu burns unit because their condition needs a highly specialized unit to manage them and since we do not have a burns unit to Masaka regional referral hospital, we had to transfer them,” Tumusiime Charles the hospital administrator said.
The injured were identified as Elijah Ssemambo, Alpha Wasswa, Ssenoga, Grant Matovu, Austin Kisembo, Jordan Ssendagire, Martin Muganga, Arnold Tumwesigye, Sharid Mwanje and their Metrone Christine Adongo .
