How girls, women from Asia are trafficked into Uganda for sexual exploitation

The Ministry of Internal Affairs has together with security agencies busted a group trafficking young women and girls , especially from Asian countries into Uganda to be used for sexual exploitation.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs spokesperson, the group was busted following a tip of by members of the public leading to a raid at Bollwood Masala bar in Kibuli in Kampala.

“At Bollywood Masaala bar we found Indian and Nepalese women who had been trafficked into the country to carry out prostitution. We found out that they had came into the country as tourists and were given one month passes on entry but after expiring, they fraudulently renewed them,” Mundeyi said.

Mundeyi explained that the young girls and women were brought into the country by an Indian broker who promised them jobs where they would earn as much as $10,000 approximately shs35million.

According to investigations, on reaching Uganda, the young girls and women were then put in a house in Namuwongo where they were given all the required necessities and in the evening of particular days, they are transported to the bar for strip dancing.

“On days they are performing, the whole place is fully packed and entrance hiked to shs300,000 whereas a bottle of beer goes for shs15000. The place is always full to capacity with many others still outside yearning to enter as the demand for these girls is always overwhelming.”

Mundeyi said that whereas for use private services of the girls one has to pay between shs1 million and shs1.5 million, the girls are paid a paltry $50 approximately 179,000.

The Internal Affairs Ministry indicated that young girls between the age of 19 and 34 are always targeted, adding that mostly they come from Asian countries of India and Nepal whereas other sought after young women and girls are from Ethiopia and Somalia who are lured in the name of making money.

Mundeyi said the Nepalese and Indian girls found in Kibuli were deported whereas their Indian broker was arrested and has since confessed to be doing this work to earn a living.

Investigations have also indicated that there are also girls from West Africa who are trafficked into the country and exploited sexually, noting that these are found in areas around Munyonyo and Kansanga in the upscale Kampala areas.
