Remove smoking zone from premises, or face the law- Nakasero hospital told

Center for Health, Human Rights and Development (CEHURD), an indigenous, non-profit, research and advocacy organisation which is responsible for pioneering the enforcement of human rights and the justiciability of the right to health in Eastern Africa, have threatened to drag Nakasero hospital for having a smoking zone in the premises.

CEHURD claim that the hospital gazetted a smoking zone contrary to the constitution of Uganda and the Tobacco Control Act 2015.

“We are writing to advise you on the illegality of having a smoking zone at the hospital premises. We have information that your premises designated a place for smoking which is contrary to sections 11,12, 13 and the second schedule of the Tobacco Control Act 2015 and article 39 of the Constitution of Uganda,” a statement from Primah Kwagala, the program manager strategic litigation for CEHURD, said.

“Failure to comply with the law may lead to civil litigation and revocation of your licence, we loom forward to your collaboration,” the statement continues.
