Schools have been encouraged to pay special attention to pupils and students reading habits. The call was made by Rotary Club of Upper Kololo’s Joyce Sadoori during a visit to St Peter’s Nsambya.
She said that it is important for a reading culture to be cultivated among the young because it will serve them for a lifetime beyond passing exams in school.
Rotary Club of Kololo was visiting St Peter’s Nsambya school to commemorate the Dear Day (Drop Everything and Read) over the weekend.
The school’s headteacher Josephine Namusoke concurred and challenged parents to assist teachers encourage their children to read. She noted that reading is the bedrock of all learning so it is crucial to cultivate a love of it in children.
Several children stepped forward to display their reading prowess to the visitors. Among the smart readers was Judith Nadamba who read aloud from the Luganda Bible exciting the listeners.
Books and other scholastic materials were then distributed to encourage the reading culture among the children.
