The Judicial Service Commission has appointed 49 new judicial officers, six of which are deputy registrars and the rest grade one magistrates.
“In exercise of its mandate under article 148 of the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda, the Judicial Service Commission has appointed 49 judicial officers six of who to the position of deputy registrars and 43 grade one magistrates. The appointments are an outcome of a JSC meeting on November 17,2021 held at the commission’s headquarters in Kampala,” a statement said.
According to the Judicial Service Commission’s secretary, Ronald Ssekagya, this brings to 169, the judicial officers at various levels of service appointed by JSC in the year 2021.
Among the newly appointed deputy registrars are former Buganda Road Chief magistrate Lillian Buchana, Ereemye James Mawanda, Julius Borore, Catherine Agwero, Mponye Sarah Kolya and Ayo Miriam Eddy Okello.
The Judicial Service Commission is a body mandated to recruit judicial officers and regulate their conduct.
The Judiciary has for long asked government for an increase in the number of judicial officers to ensure it disposes of cases quickly.
The Chief Justice, Alphonse Owiny Dollo recently said the Judiciary seeks to recruit at least 150 magistrates to ensure service is extended near reachable distance to the population.
Speaking during the budgetary conference at Kololo in September, Dollo said the Judiciary seeks to have a grade one magistrate per sub county and this will ensure the distance that people have to move to seek for their services is reduced.
