The National Unity Platform has poked holes in the government plans to deal with the surging Covid-19 situation in the country.
The acting party president and Opposition Chief Whip in Parliament, John Baptist Nambeshe while speaking to the media on Wednesday in Kampala accused the government of failing to provide leadership and a sustainable plan to deal with the pandemic.
He explained that the pandemic has adversely affected every citizen in Uganda financially, socially and emotionally, individuals and households have lost livelihoods.
"Let us always remember to pray, comfort and support each other in these trying moments. It is during these dire times that a citizen expects support from his or her government not as afterthought but in a conscious, planned and deliberate response," he said.
Nambeshe said that for over a year, Uganda has been grappling with Covid-19 pandemic and while Ugandans are struggling to pick themselves up from the ravaging effects of the pandemic, the government was preying on public resources.
"We call upon the people of Uganda who have some means to help those who don’t have the means. Clearly, the regime will not help us but we can organise ourselves and render support to each other in our communities," he said.
He said the party has been reaching out to many people and will continue to offer support to the citizens who are starving in these difficult times.
"They are not doing us favour in managing the pandemic and its devastating effects. The constitution of the Republic of Uganda under Article 189 bestows this responsibility to the government," he said.
