Staff, friends and family gathered at Omuka Restaurant in Naguru on Sunday evening to honour Julius Kitone, described by colleagues as a man who consistently put others first.
Speaking at the vigil, Lilian Mutesi, Chief of Staff at Next Media, said Kitone was known for his calm service and genuine concern for fellow staff members.
She shared a personal story that, in her view, captured his character. During a lunch break at the company cafeteria, Kitone approached her and requested a private conversation.
He quietly raised concern about a colleague he believed needed support and urged her to check in on them.
Mutesi said she later followed up and discovered that the staff member had indeed been unwell and in need of assistance. The colleague subsequently received support.
“That was Julius,” she said, describing him as someone who looked out for others without seeking recognition.
Mutesi noted that Kitone joined Next Media in 2021 and served in the newsroom with what she called quiet excellence, earning respect for his professionalism and humility.
She also addressed questions about the timing of the company’s public communication following his death. According to Mutesi, the organisation first needed to confirm details and ensure that family members were informed directly.
“People wanted us to announce earlier, but we needed to be sure of the details, and ensure they themselves don’t find out in the press,” she said.
She added that the company remains in close contact with Kitone’s family and is supporting them during what she described as a difficult period.
According to the vigil programme shared by organisers, the burial ceremony is scheduled for Monday, February 16, 2026 at 2pm in Kiteredde Cell, Magabi Ward, Ntantamuki Town Council, Kooki County, Rakai District.
Colleagues at the vigil urged the public to avoid speculation and allow the family space as arrangements continue.
