The incident occurred on May 5, 2026, in Kireka D Cell, Namugongo Division, Kira Municipality, when the baby’s mother briefly stepped out of the house, leaving the infant asleep.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect had visited the home a day earlier after travelling from Kalaki District, claiming she had come to process a National ID.

Police say the suspect allegedly used the opportunity to gain the family’s trust before carrying out the act.

Further findings suggest that the suspect may have misled her husband into believing she was pregnant. It is alleged that on May 2, she asked him for money, claiming she was going to a health facility to deliver.

“Police worked swiftly with different units to ensure the safe recovery of the child and the arrest of the suspect,” SP Kawala said.

The suspect is currently in custody and is expected to face charges, while authorities work to complete the process of reuniting the baby with the family.

Police say investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
