A new wave of violence has rocked Kaabong District after armed criminals shot and killed another person along the Kotome–Lodiko road, in an escalation of insecurity in the area. This comes barely a day after the burial of a teacher who was shot dead in the same village
Police confirmed the incident but did not reveal the identity of the victim, who was attacked in Kotome Parish while riding a motorcycle registration number KMGB 552C.
According to Mike Longole, the Karamoja Regional Police Spokesperson, security teams responded quickly and recovered the motorcycle, but the assailants had already fled the scene.
“The motive of the killing is not yet known, but investigations are underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack,” Longole said.
The body of the deceased was taken to Kaabong General Hospital for a postmortem examination as investigations continue.
The latest killing adds to a string of gun attacks that have left several people dead across Kaabong District in recent months. Local leaders say gun violence has surged sharply, with prominent community members among the victims — including religious leaders, politicians, school teachers, boda boda riders, business people, and even security personnel.
Kaabong has also witnessed a rise in kidnappings and ransom demands, further heightening fear among residents and disrupting social and economic life.
Community members are now calling on the government to deploy more security personnel and intensify patrols to restore peace and order in the district.
“We live in constant fear. People are being killed or abducted almost every week,” said Peter Komol, a resident of Kotome. “We need the government to act before more lives are lost.”
The Karamoja sub-region, which has long struggled with armed violence linked to cattle rustling and the proliferation of illegal firearms, remains one of Uganda’s most volatile areas despite ongoing security operations and disarmament programs
