KAGADI | Two people were killed after they attempted to attack security personnel investigating the macabre slaughter of family members in Kagadi District, Police have said.

Albertine Region Police spokesperson Julius Hakiza said Obedi Baguma, 33, and David Munyirambe, 36, were killed while attempting to attack security forces.

The security forces had responded to reports of a murder incident that occurred on Tuesday at about 9pm in Mizizi A Village, Kyaterekera Su-county where unknown assailants attacked residents.

At least seven people, including children, were slaughtered, while eight others sustained injuries during the attack.

A joint team of police officers, led by DPC Kagadi Kenneth Ampurira, and army personnel responded to the incident.

Police have identified the victims as Boniface Rogers Nyirambe, Isakara Yokononia, 76, Norah Kabuwere, 64, and Praise Muhindo, 7.

Others are Anitah Kabugho, 44, Masika Kabagenyi, 3, Ferdinand Baluku, 13, and Olive Kabugo, 13.

Eight others admitted to various clinics in Kyaterekera.

"We are investigating the incident, and the motive behind the attack remains unknown. We appeal to the public to provide any information regarding this incident," Hakiza added.

What really happened?

The killing remains a mystery. While locals had initially suspected Allied Democratic Front (ADF) rebels, security forces have since ruled that out.

Major Billal Katamba, the public information officer for the Mountain Division and Operation Shuuja, said in a statement that preliminary information indicates the handiwork of a yet-to-be established cult.

"Members of a new cult whose name is yet to be established descended on people, most of whom are their family members, and cut them using sharp objects leading to their death and others injured," he said.

Maj Katamba said the public will be fully updated on the progress of the hunt and the murder incident as more facts are established.

Kagadi, in the remote part of western Uganda, is a second-order administrative region west of Kabale District.
