The Danish Ambassador to Uganda, Ms Signe Winding Albejerg, has called on the leadership of Gulu University and city heads to utilise the current existing international cooperation to strengthen and improve the education standards in Northern Uganda.

This, Ms Albejerg said, can be realised by building new ways of learning and teaching.

"I myself went to a university not in the capital of Denmark but in a more rural setting and it's extremely important to have those strong universities with strong research in the rural communities as well, because when we support Gulu University, the target group of the programmes will also include the vulnerable and the poor in northern Uganda," she said.

The envoy, who is visiting Gulu University to launch the Building Stronger Universities programme, says research is very important especially now that three universities, including the University of Copenhagen from Denmark are available to support Gulu University to a tune of Shs11.1 billion.

Gulu University is the premier government University in Northern Uganda and it premises itself on community transformation.

Agatha Alidri, the programme coordinator at Gulu University, believes that the new government curriculum that tunes leaners towards solutions will help the next generation of employees.

"We are happy that today the Ugandan education system in the lower curriculum is emphasizing alot on project based learning," Alidri said.

However, as Gulu University also caters for the refugees who are spread across various settlements in the region, there is hope that the Danish funding to Gulu University will strengthen the relationship between the host and refugee communities.
