The Mbale City Health Department, in collaboration with the police, arrested 18 individuals including three women, for smoking in public places.

The arrest is part of a recent operation enforcing the Tobacco Control Act of 2015.

The joint operation, conducted between 10pm and 2am, targeted several clubs and bars in the city.

The operation was spearheaded by inspector of Police Tasonyiwa Silman in charge FFU.

Moses Mugonyi, the Mbale City Health Officer, said the suspects were caught in the act of smoking cigarettes and shisha.

"We are doing this because tobacco is one of the dangerous products which damages every part of the body from the lungs," he said.

"It is well known for causing lung cancer and heart disease; it compromises the functionality of the brain; it affects the entire body."

Zainab Namuyindi, the regional community liaison officer, said this is not a one-off operation.

"We will continue to work with the health department to ensure the safety of our community,"  she said.

A similar operation was conducted in 2023.

Tobacco Control Act of 2015

The Tobacco Control Act aims to control the demand and supply of tobacco products, protect the environment from pollution caused by tobacco production and consumption, and promote public health.

The act specifically prohibits the sale and consumption of tobacco products in public spaces, including clubs, bars, and restaurants.

Tobacco use is known to be associated with a range of serious health complications, including lung cancer and heart disease.

The public is advised to report any instances of public smoking or tobacco sales to the authorities.

The law strictly prohibits the sale and consumption of tobacco products in public spaces, and adherence to these regulations is crucial for the health and well-being of the community.

The enforcement of the Tobacco Control Act is a crucial step in reducing these risks and promoting a healthier environment for all residents of Mbale City.

By adhering to the Tobacco Control Act and supporting ongoing enforcement efforts, the community can contribute to a healthier, smoke-free environment, ultimately protecting public health and well-being.

However, the capacity of the authorities to conduct routine operations remains questionable.
