Health officials in Kitagwenda District have opened an investigation after a secondary school student developed severe complications following a tetanus vaccination, raising concern among parents even as authorities emphasize vaccine safety.

Health authorities in Kitagwenda District have launched an investigation after a student developed severe complications following a tetanus vaccination administered during a school outreach programme.

Jackline Nambale, a 20-year-old student at Kicwamba Secondary School, is battling worsening health conditions weeks after receiving the injection, sparking concern among parents and the wider community.

Speaking to Nile Post, her mother, Dinavensi Kamahurire, said her daughter has remained in critical condition since April 15, when the vaccination exercise was conducted by health workers from Ntare Health Centre IV.

“My daughter has never been the same since that day. She is in pain and her condition keeps getting worse,” Kamahurire said. “We have already spent over Shs200,000 on tests, including removing fluid from her back, and doctors are asking for another Shs500,000 for a scan, which I cannot afford.”

Kamahurire appealed to district authorities and well-wishers for urgent financial and medical support to save her daughter’s life.

Kitagwenda District Health Educator Herbert Twongyeirwe confirmed the incident, noting that the vaccination exercise covered 190 students, with only one reported case of complications.

“On the day of immunisation, about 190 students received the tetanus vaccine, and so far, only one has presented unusual complications,” Twongyeirwe said.

“We are actively reviewing her medical records and the vaccination process to establish what could have gone wrong and determine the appropriate medical intervention.”

He reassured the public that vaccines administered through official health programmes are generally safe.

“We urge the public to remain calm as we handle this matter. Our team is working around the clock to ensure the student receives the necessary care and to ascertain the cause of this condition,” he added.

Health officials said further updates will be provided as investigations progress, while the student continues to receive medical attention.
