Health authorities in Kitagwenda District have raised alarm following a sharp increase in suspected Anthrax cases, with the number rising from 10 to 20 within a week.
The Acting District Health Officer, Irene Kahimakazi, described the situation as concerning and urged residents to strictly follow public health guidelines to curb further spread.
“We have registered an increase in suspected anthrax cases from 10 to 20, and this is a serious concern,” she said. “We are calling upon the public to strictly follow the issued guidelines as we work to contain the situation.”
Dr. Kahimakazi confirmed that samples from the suspected cases have been collected and sent to reference laboratories for confirmation.
She added that the district has enlisted support from Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital to strengthen response efforts.
“Our teams are on the ground conducting surveillance and community sensitization to ensure the outbreak is contained,” she noted.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Resident District Commissioner, Benjamin Tumusiime, has called for strict adherence to preventive measures, particularly those targeting livestock movement and meat consumption.
“We urge residents to restrict the movement of animals and halt the slaughter and consumption of meat until the situation is under control,” Tumusiime emphasized. “These measures are critical in protecting lives.”
Authorities say they are closely monitoring the situation as investigations and laboratory tests continue.
Residents have been advised to promptly report any suspected symptoms in both humans and animals to the nearest health facility.
