The Ministry of Health, in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, UNICEF, and other development partners, has announced a major boost to its Community Health Workforce Development Program, with $9 million (approximately Shs32 billion) secured for implementation over the next three years.
The announcement was made during a stakeholder meeting hosted by the Ministry this morning to discuss the program’s rollout, which is spearheaded by the Health Promotion Department.
The initiative aims to train and equip over 1,000 Community Health Extension Workers (CHEWs) and thousands of Village Health Teams (VHTs) across the country. The goal is to strengthen the capacity of Uganda’s frontline health workers and improve service delivery at the community level.
According to the Ministry, this effort aligns with a global commitment to expand and professionalize community health workforces as a key pillar in achieving universal health coverage.
Officials expressed optimism that the investment will help bridge critical gaps in community health and enhance grassroots health promotion, disease prevention, and basic care delivery.
