An unidentified, flu-like illness has killed dozens of people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
According to reports, between 67 and 143 people in the DRC have died from an unknown, flu-like disease in the recent past.
Since the outbreak, deaths have been reported in the Kwango province, which is located in the southwestern portion of the country and shares a border with Angola to the south. Between Nov. 10 and Nov. 25, between 67 and 143 people died from the mystery illness in what’s known as the Panzi health zone within the province.
Reports indicate that women and children are the most seriously affected by the disease, with the disease being more lethal in children over the age of 15.
The DRC has already notified the World Health Organization about the outbreak.
Authorities in the DRC have urged the population to remain calm and vigilant. They urged people to wash their hands with soap, avoid mass gatherings, and avoid touching the bodies of the deceased without qualified health personnel.
The central African country has also been dealing with a severe outbreak of mpox. Between January and July this year, they recorded about 14,500 infections.
The DRC has also dealt with bouts of Ebola over the years.
