15 lawyers to petition court over age-limit debate

A section of legal brains under their umbrella organisation Lawyers of Constitutionalism in Uganda have vowed to petition court over Parliament's decision to pass the Age limit bill which among others allows MPs to extend their tenure from five to seven years.

A team of 15 lawyers including one judge has been established to draft the petition.

Yusuf Nsibambi a law don and chairman Kampala Land Board said the process of passing the bill was unjust and an abuse of constitutionalism in Uganda.

“The process was illegal and its unfortunate the legislators let it pass," Nsibambi said.

“We are not petitioning the bill. Once the President assents to it then we a good to go."

The lawyers argue that the process was marred with irregularities and it’s unfortunate the legislators never contested this.

Nsibambi though was hesitant to disclose the other members of the team for security reasons.

He was however hopeful that given the way the speaker of parliament Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga manned the House during the debate, they have a good case to present.
