Former FDC President Major General Mugisha Muntu has weighed in on the battle between different parties for positions in the newly created constituencies cautioning party leaders to exercise restraint and maturity in handling the situation.
Speaking at a time when his party the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) and Justice Forum (JEEMA) are caught up in a contest on who to field for the Bugiri municipality parliamentary seat ,Muntu rallied the different players not to lose sight of the bigger cause of dislodging President Yoweri Museveni.
“I think it’s important for the different players to remain engaged ,I know there are already efforts for engagement with the different parties , we should find ways of coordinating and corporating to achieve a common good, “ General Muntu said
Muntu argues that even if consensus is not achieved in a particular area , efforts of a joint front against President Museveni should not be derailed as well.
“We need to be mature to know that when you are managing complex situations , the ultimate focus should be on the common good , whatever happens should not force the actors to lose the ultimate objective” Muntu added
The opposition unity faces a test as the nation gears up for elections in the newly created municipalities totaling six in number
Kawempe north legislator Latiff Ssebagala commenting on the matter called on all players in the opposition to adopt a give and take approach that can set the pace for change in the country
He says a divided opposition is not likely to achieve the greater good of effecting regime change
Ntungamo municipality law maker Gerrard Karuhanga says the conflict in itself is not a bad thing as long as it is effectively managed by the different stake holders
He says the opposition enjoys a wave from the recently concluded constitutional amendment process that he says will be translated into support for the opposition
ICT minister Frank Tumwebaze however dismisses the assertion insisting mps are not mad to vote against the interests of their constituents who he says they were widely consulted in the process.
He says the opposition is holding onto false hope because the NRM has triumphed in all the recently concluded by elections except Jinja east in which FDC’s Paul Mwiru trounced Nathan Nabeta
Tumwebaze says the opposition will be trounced in the upcoming elections because of what he calls the mass appeal of ruling NRM party
After the parliamentary elections, the political parties will square off in the LC 1 polls that have been set for 10th of July.
