During the liturgy of the Chrism Mass at Lubaga Cathedral on Thursday, March 28, His Grace Paul Ssemogerere, the archbishop of Kampala Archdiocese, delivered a stirring homily urging priests to embrace lives marked by humility and simplicity.
"We must strive to be more effective ministers to our flocks," he urged, "bearing witness to the teachings of Christ through our words and actions."
The archbishop's impassioned plea comes in response to reported instances of arrogance and misconduct among some clergy, tarnishing the reputation of vows pledged by the men in 'person of Christ'.
Addressing the congregation that hard half of the interior chapel of the cathedral filled with the clergy during the Holy Thursday liturgy, Archbishop Ssemogerere emphasised the key role of priests as leaders within their communities.
"Priests are viewed as leaders of the church in their respective communities," he stated, "and the strength of a good leader lies in his capacity to listen with respect and obedience to those under his care."
The Archbishop's call for humility and simplicity resonated throughout the Mass as he blessed the oils to be used in the administration of sacraments throughout the Archdiocese.
These sacred oils, including those for baptism, confirmation, ordination, and the anointing of the sick, symbolize the spiritual nourishment and healing provided by the Church to its members.
In the mass, Archbishop Ssemogerere welcomed 20 lectors and acolytes in their final seminary stage as candidates to the diaconate.
The prelate, Ssemogerere reminded the faithful on the significance of holy Thursday as an initiation to the Pascal Triduum, a solemn period commemorating the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
The Triduum, culminating in Easter Sunday, serves as a profound reminder of the core tenets of the Christian faith.
