The East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) company has signed a memorandum of understanding with two Rotary International districts to launch an environmental sustainability program in schools.
The “EACOP Green Schools Initiative” will provide resources and environmental education to schools in 10 districts along the pipeline’s 1,443-kilometer route.
The districts include Hoima, Kikuube, Kakumiro, Kyankwanzi, Mubende, Gomba, Sembabule, Lwengo, Rakai and Kyotera.
During a signing ceremony, Rotary District 9213 Gov. Geoffrey Kitakule emphasized the organization’s commitment to environmental protection.
“This partnership is timely. Rotary’s commitment to supporting the environment aligns perfectly with the Green Schools Initiative,” Kitakule said. “There is no better way to secure a sustainable future than working with young people — the champions of tomorrow.”
Kitakule also detailed some of Rotary’s other conservation efforts, including plans to plant forests and protect the Nile Basin.
He also mentioned a new project to establish a floating hospital to provide healthcare to island communities.
EACOP Deputy Managing Director JB Habumugisha called the initiative a “proactive response to the pressing need for sustainable solutions.
Christine Kyeyune Kawooya, governor for Rotary District 9214, also praised the collaboration.
“Our communities depend on how well we prepare the next generation to care for the environment,” she said.
She said the initiative will empower students to become “custodians of the environment.
Under this arrangement, Rotary will work closely with schools to promote tree planting, sustainable waste management, and climate education.
The initiative’s activities will include installing solar systems, establishing green spaces with fruit and vegetable gardens, improving waste management, and installing sanitation and rainwater harvesting systems.
The EACOP is a crude oil export pipeline that will transport oil from Uganda’s Hoima district to a port in Tanga, Tanzania.
EACOP Ltd., the company responsible for the pipeline’s construction and operation, is a joint venture with shareholders including TotalEnergies, Uganda National Oil Company, Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation and CNOOC.
