There are growing concerns in Kampala following reports that Ugandan musician King Zale was allegedly abducted by armed men in what witnesses described as a “drone” operation in Kamwokya.
The incident, which has sparked anxiety among residents and opposition supporters, was brought to public attention by Nakawa Division Mayor-elect Ali Buken, who strongly condemned the manner of the arrest.
In his statement, Buken criticised the use of force and secrecy, urging security agencies to adhere to lawful procedures.
“We condemn this kind of operation. If security agencies have issues with any Ugandan, they should arrest them in broad daylight or summon them. We are law-abiding citizens,” he said.
His remarks reflect broader concern among sections of the public about how arrests are conducted, particularly when heavily armed personnel are involved.
King Zale is known within political and entertainment circles and has previously been associated with the security team of Robert Kyagulanyi during nationwide tours leading up to his presidential bid. He is also linked to supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP), where several artists have played roles in mobilisation and public engagement.
The reported abduction has reignited debate over so-called “drone” operations—an informal term used locally to describe arrests carried out by plain-clothed armed operatives using unmarked vehicles.
Critics argue that such methods create fear and uncertainty among the public, undermine trust in law enforcement agencies, make it difficult for families to trace detained individuals, and raise concerns about due process and accountability.
Musician Nubian Li also condemned the reported incident, adding his voice to calls for transparency and respect for legal procedures.
By the time of publication, neither the Uganda Police Force nor the Uganda People's Defence Force had issued an official statement confirming the arrest or clarifying the circumstances.
The alleged abduction has heightened concern among residents of Kamwokya and opposition supporters, with growing calls for authorities to account for King Zale’s whereabouts and ensure that, if he is in custody, his rights are upheld under the law.
