Crowned in Purpose, Rooted in Service’: Inaugural Gala to Celebrate a New Vision for Leadership in Kampala
More than just a celebration, the event is a profound call to action for leaders across generations to embrace a model of leadership that is intentional, empathetic, and deeply committed to community.

Tomorrow night, Kampala’s Serena Hotel will host a gathering unlike any other: the Inaugural Leaders’ Gala and Ball.

More than just a celebration, the event is a profound call to action for leaders across generations to embrace a model of leadership that is intentional, empathetic, and deeply committed to community.

Hosted by the pan-African organization CivSource Africa and supported by partners including MTN Uganda, NBS TV, and AfroMobile, the gala will bring together 200-300 senior leaders, public servants, young trailblazers, and philanthropists under the guiding theme, “Crowned in Purpose, Rooted in Service.”

The theme, as explained by organizers, is a solemn invitation for leaders to reflect on their roles not as titles, but as a lifelong commitment.

“Crowned in Purpose” signifies that true leadership is a calling anchored in a mission beyond self-interest, while “Rooted in Service” affirms that its greatest strength is found in humility and a genuine connection to the people it serves.

For Jacqueline Asimwe, the CEO of CivSource Africa, the gala is the culmination of eight years of dedicated work.

"This is us trying to bring together the sum total of the work we have done over the last 8 years," she explained during an interview on NBS TV's "Breakfast Meeting" show this morning.

"That journey has seen us build leaders, walk with leaders, cry with leaders, fight with leaders."

She broke down the theme’s meaning: "What is leadership without purposefulness? You're crowned in a sense for responsibility... but also rooted in service because why are we leading? We lead to serve. We want to bring the two things together, the responsibility of leadership and what we lead for."

The event will physically manifest this vision by uniting the elder statespeople CivSource has worked with alongside the young, emerging leaders it has trained, creating a unique space for intergenerational connection. For those unable to attend, the event will be streamed live on AfroMobile via the NBS Live channel.

One of the key voices at the gala will be Dr. Lydia Mpanga-Semuyira, a Director at Imprint, Uganda, who has dedicated her life to capacity building. She believes the most enduring leaders share common patterns. "One of the patterns is discipline—the people who keep at it and keep doing it, even when it gets hard," she said. "But the servant leadership is the pattern or the model that I've seen really works."

For Dr. Mpanga-Semuyira, the ultimate measure of leadership is legacy, which she beautifully describes as “the fragrance you leave behind.”

She argues that true legacy is not what is left in institutions or books, but what is left in people.

"You need to leave an imprint on people who then the ripple effect is that they leave an imprint on others," she explained.

This journey is not without its trials. Ms. Asimwe spoke with remarkable candor about her own leadership struggles, including seasons where she felt like giving up.

She shared her personal anchors for navigating tough times: encouraging other leaders when she feels discouraged and leaning into gratitude for her team, even in moments of frustration.

The gala itself promises to be a night of deep connection and celebration. Guests will witness the honoring of elders, the launch of a new philanthropic initiative, and the celebration of 50 young leaders whose attendance is sponsored by MTN Uganda.

Ultimately, the event is a timely reminder that, as its theme concludes, “Africa’s future rests in the hands of those willing to lead not from ego, but from ethics, empathy, and enduring purpose.”
