Renowned Ugandan actor Peter Odeke has returned to the big screen, taking on the lead role in the film Janani: The Last Stand.

Currently showing in cinemas throughout Kampala, the movie depicts the life and final moments of the legendary Archbishop Janani Luwum, a martyr and a significant figure in Uganda's history.

Premiering at Century Cinemax Acacia, the film offers a powerful representation of Archbishop Luwum's bravery in the face of oppression.

Following the premiere, audiences can look forward to an emotional journey that explores themes of faith, sacrifice, and resilience.

Reflecting on this significant achievement, Odeke expressed his gratitude for being cast in such an important role.

"I've acted in a couple of movies before, but this... this was the lead role. And it was on the iconic Janani Luwum. I questioned myself: "Would i do the role justice?" Then I challenged myself to pull it off," Odeke said.

He added, "The moment of truth is finally here: #Janani; The Last Stand, now in cinemas across Kampala."

Janani Jakaliya Luwum was the archbishop of the Church of Uganda from 1974 to 1977 and one of the most influential leaders of the modern church in Africa.

He served as the Archbishop of the Metropolitan Province of Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and Boga (in Zaire), becoming the second African to hold this position.

Odeke acted in other movies previously.

He was arrested in February 1977 and died shortly after. Although the official account describes a car crash, it is generally accepted that he was murdered on the orders of then-President Idi Amin.

Archbishop Luwum is recognized as a martyr by the Anglican Communion and his statue is among the Twentieth Century Martyrs on the front of Westminster Abbey in London.

Who is Odeke?

In addition to his acting career, Odeke plays a significant role in the Protocol Unit of Uganda's Parliament, seamlessly combining his artistic endeavors with public service.

His acting journey began in the 1990s at the National Theatre, where he took on various notable roles, including in international productions like "Sometimes in April" and "Queen of Katwe."

Odeke's love for storytelling was cultivated during his education at Kitante Primary School and St. Mary’s College Kisubi, where he developed his drama skills. He made his professional debut in the 2002 television series "Centre 4," where he portrayed a lead character that left a lasting impression on many viewers.

Throughout the years, he has made significant contributions to radio dramas, stage plays, and films, gaining recognition for his ability to portray his characters with authenticity.
