The state minister for primary education Rosemary Sseninde, has revealed that teachers who are cited in cases of defilement will have their services terminated immediately by the ministry of Education and Sports.
She made the revelation during the three day National Teachers Conference at St Lawrence London college in Maya.
She said many teachers have failed to respect the children who are placed under their care developing.
Her remarks followed concerns by the ministry over the rising cases of pupils being defiled by teachers in primary schools around the country.
“You can only be respected if you are not a teacher who defiles our children. You can only be the teacher who will be respected if you respect the learners you teach,” she said.
The minister cautioned teachers that the ministry will not fail to take immediate action against those who are found guilty of defiling their pupils.
“The law must take its course but in addition, we have the right as the ministry of Education to write off that teacher because we are the ones who provide them with licenses,” she said.
She further warned teachers who abscond from duty that they will be deleted from the government payroll.
“Unfortunately for the teachers who keep on absenting themselves, they must not forget that we have the right to write them off the payroll,” she said.
She advised the female pupils not to walk alone especially during night time and also to report any related form of sexual harassment to the relevant authority such as the woman senior teachers in their respective school.
A study carried out by the ministry of Education and Sports in 2015 showed that 77% of primary school children are subjected to some form of sexual abuse while at school.
