Teaching and non-teaching staff in Public Universities have warned that they will not be opening for the new semester if government doesn’t fulfil its pledge to enhance their salaries in 2019/2020.
At its special joint staff assembly held on Tuesday, July 30th 2019, in the Main Hall West, Kyambogo University staff unanimously adopted the FASPU/PUNTSEF resolution that was adopted earlier this year of not opening for the 2019/2020 semester if government fails to fulfil its pledge.
On 27th, June 2019, the public universities teaching and non teaching staff resolved that “If the balance of the Presidential Pledge on salary enhancement is not given in the FY2019/2020, all staff in public Universities will not resume work effective 1st August, 2019.”
The chairperson of the Kyambogo University Staff Association, Dr Grace Lubaale said that they are going to maintain the resolution unless government fulfils its pledge.
In a letter that has been accessed by The Nile Post, Lubaale says all staff, academic, administrative and support will not appear to work if the condition is not addressed in “totality."
Meanwhile, the teaching and non teaching staff in other public Universities have also maintained that they will not to open for the new semester until the presidential pledge is fulfilled.
The government recently allocated Shs 500 billion for the salary increase of public servants, universities were allocated shs 15 billion while teachers were allocated Shs 135 billion.
Jackson Betihama, the chairperson of the public universities non teaching staff said the 15 billion granted to them is to little to be shared among all of them.
Muruli Mukasa, the Public service minister said that the remaining balance will be allocated in the second in second quarter.
He appealed to the staff to call off the strike and go back to work.
