Public universities are set to close their tuition fees bank accounts all over the country as Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) is set to take over the fees collection processes.
Last month, the Ministry of Finance passed a directive to URA to collect fees from all public universities on behalf of government saying that universities were having ghost enrollments and they didn't submit all the money they were collecting.
The directive is effective August 2019 when the public universities open for the 2019/2020 academic year.
Kyambogo University Vice Chancellor Prof. Eli Katunguka said that they are ready to implement the directive once they get the official communication from URA.
While addressing journalists at the launch of Staff Insurance Scheme at Kyambogo, Prof Eli Katunguka said that they are not yet aware of how URA is going to implement the directive.
" We currently don't know the modalities URA intends to use to collect the tuition. We as government universities are going to write a communique which we shall present to the ministries of Finance and Education and URA for clarity," Prof. Katunguka said.
He said that staff that has been employed in the accounts offices will be assigned to other jobs within the university.
The spokesperson of the Ministry of Finance Jim Mugunga confirmed the reports saying that the Ministry realised that there was abuse of funds in public institutions.
