Efforts to expand access to education and vocational skills in Mityana District have been strengthened with the launch of a community initiative by the Mulasa Foundation, aimed at supporting learners from disadvantaged backgrounds while equipping adults with practical trades.
The programme, implemented in partnership with the Rotary Club of Kampala Kibuli, seeks to improve educational opportunities for children while addressing the challenge of unemployment through skills development for out-of-school youth and adults.
Although Uganda has made strides in expanding access to education, many children from financially constrained households still struggle to remain in school.
The foundation’s initiative aims to bridge this gap by providing scholastic materials and promoting continued education among vulnerable learners.
“Many parents today are struggling financially, which makes it difficult for them to provide all the necessities their children need for education,” said Musitwa Mulasa, highlighting that the programme targets children from underprivileged families.
“Through this initiative, we want to support learners so they can remain in school and pursue their studies.”
Beyond supporting school-going children, the foundation plans to establish a vocational training centre where adults and youth who are not in school can acquire practical skills.
“These skills will help them start small businesses and become self-reliant,” Mulasa said, explaining that hands-on training in various trades will enable participants to generate income and secure livelihoods.
Co-director Hellena Musitwa emphasized that empowering both learners and adults is central to sustainable community development.
“Our goal is not only to support children in school but also to empower adults with practical skills that can help improve their livelihoods,” she said.
Community leaders and residents have welcomed the initiative, expressing hope that its combined focus on education and skills development will reduce school dropout rates and create income-generating opportunities, contributing to broader social and economic growth in Mityana District.
