Kabale University to Install Mathew Rukikaire as Second Chancellor

Kabale University is scheduled to install its second chancellor, Canon Mathew Rukikaire, on March 31, 2026, in a ceremony that underscores a new chapter in the institution’s leadership.

The installation represents an important milestone for the university, particularly following its transition from a private institution to a public university in 2015.

Preparations for the ceremony have been led by the university council under Addison Kakuru.

The development follows the completion of the tenure of Mondo Kagonyera, who first assumed the role in 2016, was reappointed in 2021, and concluded his second four-year term on April 28, 2025.

In an instrument of appointment dated October 17, 2025, President Museveni exercised his authority under Section 30(1) of the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act to appoint Canon Rukikaire for a four-year term.

As chancellor, Rukikaire is expected to play a central role in guiding the university’s strategic direction and supporting its mission to deliver quality education while contributing to socio-economic development in the Kigezi sub-region.

A seasoned Ugandan public servant, entrepreneur, and faith leader, Rukikaire brings extensive experience in governance, public administration, and private sector development.

He notably contributed to Uganda’s economic reforms and privatization efforts in the 1990s.

In his new role, he will provide strategic leadership, promote academic excellence and research, strengthen community engagement, and serve as the university’s ceremonial head.
