The Ministry of Education has announced a new date for the reopening of all schools and education institutions across Uganda, shifting the start of the academic term from February 2 to Tuesday, February 10, 2026.

In an official announcement dated January 16, 2026, the Ministry said the decision was taken due to the General Elections and the need to ensure the safety of learners across the country.

The revised directive applies to all categories of education institutions, including international schools, tertiary institutions, and universities.

“Due to the General Elections and to ensure the safety of all learners, all Schools and Education Institutions across the country are directed to reopen on Tuesday 10th February 2026,” the Ministry said in the statement.

The announcement follows an earlier communication issued on January 6, 2026, which had set February 2 as the reopening date.

The Ministry further clarified the academic calendar for Term 1 of the 2026 Academic Year, stating that the term will run from Tuesday, February 10, 2026, to Friday, May 1, 2026.

Vice chancellors, principals, headteachers, parents, guardians, school administrators, students, and members of the public have been formally notified of the changes.

All school administrators have been directed to strictly adhere to the revised dates and to follow the approved school calendar published on the Ministry of Education and Sports website.

The announcement was signed by the Permanent Secretary, Dr Kedrace R. Turyagyenda.
