The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Dr. Tanga Odoi, has called on political leaders in Tororo District to look beyond politics and focus on supporting the young generation, especially primary school pupils preparing for their Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE).
Dr. Tanga expressed concern that following the recent teachers’ strike, which kept many learners out of school, candidates need extra guidance and motivation if the district is to perform well in the upcoming national exams.
“Let every political leader go back to his or her former school and talk to these learners. This will motivate them to work hard towards achieving high,” said Dr. Tanga Odoi.
He noted that many pupils were demoralized during the strike and may not perform to expectation unless they are encouraged and supported.
“The strike has really affected our children. Though the strike was genuine, teachers ought to understand its impact,” he added.
Dr. Tanga made the remarks at his home in Kisoko, where he hosted over ten primary school candidates together with their teachers and parents.
During the event, he also warned parents against domestic violence, saying it negatively affects children’s concentration and academic performance.
“If you are a man who keeps beating the mother of your child, there is no way that child can perform well in school. He or she will eventually drop out,” Dr. Tanga cautioned.
According to the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB), this year’s Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) will begin with a candidate briefing on October 31, 2025, while the written papers are scheduled for November 3 and 4, 2025.
