Parents  in Kamwenge have been urged to enroll their children in vocational schools to equip them with practical skills for self-employment and economic independence.

The call comes as education stakeholders emphasize the growing importance of technical education in addressing youth unemployment and fostering self-reliance.

Gad Musinguzi, a senior instructor at Kabuga Hope Vocational Secondary School in Kabuga Town Council, highlighted the vast opportunities vocational training offers.

"Vocational studies empower students with hands-on skills that enable them to create their own jobs instead of waiting for white-collar employment," he said in an interview.

He further urged parents to change their perception of technical and vocational institutions, noting that they should not be seen as options for students who fail in academic studies.

"It is high time parents stopped looking at vocational schools as dumping sites for failures. These institutions are centers of excellence where learners gain practical knowledge essential for national development," Mr. Musinguzi  explained.

To demonstrate the impact of vocational education, he  shared his own experience. He has successfully established a carpentry workshop in Ekikona Trading Center, Kahunge Sub-County, which has provided him with a stable income.

"The skills I gained have enabled me to run my business effectively. I encourage young people to embrace technical training as a path to financial independence," he said.

He also emphasized the importance of integrity and reliability in sustaining businesses, particularly in the vocational sector.

"Trust is key in any business. When customers believe in your work, they will always come back and even refer others. This is how vocational skills can transform lives," Mr. Musinguzi added.

Education experts in Kamwenge have echoed his sentiments, urging local leaders to sensitize communities on the benefits of vocational training.

They argue that with the increasing demand for skilled workers in industries such as construction, mechanics, and carpentry, vocational education should be prioritized alongside traditional academics.

With the rising cost of university education and the high unemployment rate among graduates, technical training is becoming a viable alternative for many families.

As more parents in Kamwenge District recognize its potential, vocational schools are expected to play a crucial role in shaping the future workforce.
