Student Wants Nursing Career After Giving Birth During UCE Exams
Asiimamukama expressed a desire to continue with her studies

Susan Asiimamukama, 18, a student at Bwiizi Seed Secondary School in Bwiizi Sub County, gave birth on Monday, October 14, just after completing her Chemistry exam under the lower curriculum.

A Senior Four student from Kamwenge District has spoken of her desire to pursue a career in nursing after delivering a baby girl during the ongoing Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) examinations.

Susan Asiimamukama, 18, a student at Bwiizi Seed Secondary School in Bwiizi Sub-county, gave birth on Monday, October 14, just after completing her Chemistry exam under the lower curriculum.

Despite the challenges of childbirth during a critical time in her academic journey, Asiimamukama remains resolute in her ambition to pursue a nursing career.

Speaking to the Nile Post, Asiimamukama expressed desire to continue with her studies and fulfill her dream of making a difference in her community through nursing.

“My dream is to become a nurse and treat people, while also supporting my child if all goes well,” she said.

Both mother and child are reported to be in good health, and Asiimamukama is optimistic about completing the remaining exams.

“I and my baby are very okay. I hope to finish all my papers as I get more time to breastfeed my baby,” Asiimamukama stated confidently.

Her determination has earned praise from her school's head teacher, Festo Musinguzi, who commended her as one of the school’s most promising students.

“Asiimamukama is one of the best students we have, and we are confident she will excel in her exams,” Musinguzi noted.

He also highlighted the school's efforts to support her during this period, ensuring she has the resources needed to complete her exams successfully.

“As the school administration, we pledge to provide any necessary support to help her finish her exams smoothly,” he added.

At the time of reporting, Asiimamukama’s baby was resting under a mosquito net in one of the school offices.

The Uganda Ministry of Education and Sports has a policy in place to support girls who give birth during their exams.

This policy allows them to continue their education, a progressive move aimed at preventing school dropouts due to pregnancy or childbirth. The initiative underscores the government's commitment to promoting girls' education across the country.
