Kenya’s Veronica Nduva has been appointed and sworn in as the new Secretary General (SG) of the East African Community (EAC).

appointed and sworn in during the 23rd Extra-Ordinary Summit of the EAC Heads of State held virtually and chaired by Salva Kiir Mayardit, the President of South Sudan.

Her term runs until April 25, 2026.

“Congratulations to Ms Veronica Mueni Nduva on her appointment as the new Secretary General of the East African Community,” the EAC said in their announcement.

“Her leadership and vision will drive regional integration and development forward. Looking forward to a brighter future for East Africa!”

Nduva replaces Peter Mathuki who was recalled by Kenya in March 2024 and deployed as the country’s ambassador to Moscow.

The new and first female SG of EAC took oath of office on Friday evening at State House in Juba, Republic of South Sudan.

Nduva said her new priorities will include strengthening economic integration and promoting climate resilient growth.

“Your Excellencies, in promoting peace and security, a secure East Africa is the foundation upon which we can build lasting prosperity,” she said.

“To promote climate resilient growth, we will continue addressing the pressing challenges of climate change collectively as a region. This includes promoting green energy, sustainable agriculture, conservation efforts and resource mobilisation as a bloc,” she added.

President Museveni congratulated Nduva and expressed his reservations on elimination of non-tariff barriers to harness the EAC federation’s potential.
