Police in Kanungu District are investigating circumstances under which the body of an unidentified woman was discovered floating in River Ntungwa, sparking calls for possible identification of missing persons.

Police in Kanungu District are investigating the death of an unidentified woman whose body was found in River Ntungwa in Kiruruma Cell, Rushaki Parish, Nyamirama Sub-county.

According to Kigezi Police spokesperson Elly Maate, on May 17, 2026 at about 8:00 p.m., Julius Sabit Turyagyenda, the area chairperson of Kibarama Cell, received a report from a resident alerting him about a body floating in the river.

“The following morning, he went to the river with other residents and found the decomposing body of a woman who was unknown to the local community. The matter was immediately reported to police,” Maate said.

Police later visited and examined the scene, documenting key findings before retrieving the body. It was taken to Kambuga Hospital for a postmortem examination.

Maate also urged members of the public who may be missing a relative to visit the hospital mortuary for possible identification of the deceased to facilitate burial arrangements.
