A three-year-old boy, Sali Hinda Jaiden, tragically drowned in a water pit at a coffee plantation in Luuka District while a family SACCO meeting was underway. Police are investigating the circumstances, urging communities to improve child supervision and secure open water sources to prevent similar accidents.

 

Police in Luuka are investigating a tragic incident in which a three-year-old boy drowned in a water pit in Luuka District. The deceased has been identified as Sali Hinda Jaiden, a resident of Lukunhu A Cell, Busalamu Town Council.

According to authorities, the incident occurred over the weekend during a village SACCO meeting held at the family’s home.

Preliminary reports indicate that the child was playing nearby while the adults took shelter inside the house as rain fell.

After the rain subsided, family members realized the child was missing. Their search ended in tragedy when they discovered Jaiden’s lifeless body in a pit dug for water collection within a nearby coffee plantation.

Police from Busalamu Police Station have launched a death inquiry to establish the full circumstances and are recording statements from family members and witnesses to determine if criminal negligence was involved.

SSP Samson Lubega, Police Public Relations Officer for Busoga North Region, expressed condolences to the bereaved family and emphasized vigilance in child supervision.

“The Uganda Police Force continues to urge parents, guardians, and community members to exercise maximum vigilance and supervision over children, especially during gatherings and adverse weather conditions,” he said.

Authorities also urged local leaders and community groups to prioritize safety by fencing or covering open water sources, highlighting the persistent hazards of unfenced pits and trenches in rural areas.

The police pledged a thorough investigation and stressed the importance of proactive community measures to prevent similar tragedies.
