Dis-Mis debunks fake screenshot with alleged remarks from Kyambogo Vice-chancellor

Next Media has flagged a circulating screenshot featuring purported remarks from Kyambogo University vice-chancellor, Prof Eli Katunguka, which is falsely attributed to the Nile Post as the source.

The screenshot in question shows a fabricated quote from the university chancellor, regarding the postponement of this year's guild presidential elections.

It also features a logo and branding elements resembling those of Next Media, misleading many into believing the quote was posted by the Nile Post (company of Next Media).

The quotes imply that Katunguka stated the university administration would impose a guild president on the students, regardless of their preferences.

"We shall select for them a leader whether they like it or not. Whoever is not satisfied can go and hang. I am in charge." are the purported remarks.

However, it is not true that the Nile Post reported the alleged statements.

On Tuesday, Next Media flagged the screenshot and advised the public to disregard it, as it is fake and digitally altered.

This comes in the wake of ongoing nationwide campaign dubbed #DisMisFakeNews, to combat spread of false information.

Spearheaded by Next Media and other stakeholders, the campaign is aimed at combating the spread of false information, particularly on social media.

As misinformation continues to spread, the role of responsible media companies like Next Media is vital in combating false narratives.

While speaking at the campaign launch this month, Next Media Group CEO Kin Kariisa warned that misinformation could pose risks to the community, potentially lead to diplomatic issues, jeopardize national security, and deter investors or tourists.

This fake screenshot featuring quotes falsely attributed to Prof. Katunguka could incite violence among students, underscoring the urgent need to combat the spread of misinformation in the country.

Guild elections postponement

Last week, Prof Katunguka announced the postponement of the 2024/2025 Kyambogo guild elections following petitions from candidates contesting the electoral process.

The petitions arose after three guild presidential candidates were disqualified just three days before the general elections, prompting one of them to file a complaint.

In his statement dated October 25, Prof. Katunguka announced the suspension of the 2024/2025 guild elections until further notice.

He also mandated the formation of an Adhoc Committee to investigate the conduct of the 2024/2025 guild electoral process and to provide recommendations regarding the petitions submitted by the various candidates.
