Police in Kampala have arrested a school director after a four year old toddler fell into a tea saucepan at the school.
The incident according to Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, Racheal Kawala, happened at Spotless Kindergarten in Kawanda-Kivulu, Nabweru Division, Nansana Municipality in Wakiso district when a four year old middle class pupil fell into the saucepan.
“It is alleged that on April, 10, the deceased fell in a saucepan of hot tea and got severe burns all over the lower body before he was rushed to Kiruddu National Referral Hospital,” Kawala said.
She said the four-year-old died five days later due to the burns.
Police said they have since arrested the school director, Elizabeth Aliku to answer charges of a rush and negligent act that caused the death of a person.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the saucepan of tea had been brought into the classroom and by the time the incident happened, there was no teacher in class,”Kawala said.
She said the school director will help in providing answers to why and how a saucepan of hot tea was brought to class and left unattended, leading to the incident that saw a four-year-old child fall into it.
Police however warned schools against such negligence, noting that they are reminded of ensuring safety of learners.
Kawala said police is to start inspections to ensure kitchens are in secure areas.
