Residents of Bwaise III in Kawempe Division were on edge after discovering mutilated human body parts dumped in a drainage channel in what police are treating as a suspected murder.
The remains were reportedly found by children commonly known as “Kawenja,” who had gone to collect plastic bottles from the channel. The children alerted nearby residents, who later notified Police.
Officers from Kawempe Division responded to the scene, retrieved the body parts and deployed sniffer dogs to search for additional remains in the surrounding area.
Some residents who witnessed the recovery said the legs appeared to belong to a woman.
“We gathered as police retrieved the body parts, and from what we saw, the legs looked like they belonged to a woman,” one resident said.
The gruesome discovery has sparked outrage and fear among residents, who condemned the killing of an unidentified person in such a brutal manner.
“This is a terrifying act. We don’t know who the victim is, but killing someone and dumping their body like this is inhuman,” another resident lamented.
Residents called on security agencies to strengthen protection in the area, citing what they described as a surge in crime.
Hadijah Nakubulwa, the area councillor, warned that crime in Northern Bwaise is escalating.
“This area is increasingly becoming a hotspot for crime. The perpetrators act without fear, and residents are living in constant anxiety,” Nakubulwa said.
Rachel Kawala, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, confirmed the incident and said investigations began immediately.
“Police responded promptly to the scene and recovered the body parts. We have deployed canine units to search for more remains and are working to establish the identity of the deceased,” Kawala stated.
She added that some of the recovered remains were transported to Mulago City Mortuary as investigations continue.
“The recovered body parts have been taken to Mulago for postmortem examination as we continue with inquiries,” she said.
Police have urged anyone with information that could assist investigations to come forward.
