Police in Nabilatuk District have launched a manhunt for a suspect who allegedly shot his neighbour twice following a dispute over a Shs50,000 debt, an incident that has raised fresh concerns about the misuse of firearms in Karamoja.

Police are investigating a shooting incident in which a 22-year-old man was shot by his neighbour following a disagreement over an unpaid debt of Shs50,000 in Nabilatuk District.

The incident occurred on January 7, 2026, at about 9:30pm in Lotede ‘B’ Cell, Arengesiep Ward, Nabilatuk Town Council.

The victim has been identified as Moru Philip, a peasant and resident of the area. Police say he was allegedly shot by Mark Owalanga, also known as Nyanya, after a dispute linked to the debt.

The Karamoja Regional Police Spokesperson, IP Mike Longole, said the suspect reportedly called the victim on phone and asked him to meet at a specific location.

Upon arrival, Philip Moru was shot twice.

“A shooting incident was reported and police, together with UPDF officers, responded immediately to the scene,” IP Longole said.

The response team, led by the Nabilatuk District Police Commander, SP Mugerwa, recovered two spent bullet cartridges and a magazine loaded with 23 live bullets from the scene.

Philip Moru was rushed to a health facility where he is receiving medical attention.

By the time of filing this report, police had not officially disclosed his condition.

The suspect fled the scene and remains at large. Police have launched a manhunt to trace and arrest him and to recover the firearm used in the attack.

Police have appealed to members of the public to provide any information that may help in locating the suspect as investigations continue.

“This act of violence is criminal and unjustified. We urge anyone with information to cooperate with the police so that the suspect can be brought to justice,” IP Longole said.
