Residents of Irimya Parish in Kicuzi Sub-county, Ibanda District, have raised alarm over increasing insecurity in their area, urging authorities to restore a police post that was relocated earlier this year.
Community members say the absence of a nearby police presence has led to a surge in criminal activities, including theft and murder, leaving families fearful.
Speaking at a security meeting on Thursday, residents expressed frustration over delayed police responses, as the nearest post is now located about 15 kilometres away at Kicuzi Sub-county headquarters.
“We are no longer safe. When crimes occur, help comes too late because the police are far away. We appeal to the government to bring back our police post,” one resident said.
Local Council II Chairperson Samuel Byamugisha noted that the police post had served the community for over 20 years before its relocation in February 2025. He emphasized that its absence has left residents vulnerable to criminals and called for urgent reconsideration of the decision.
Ibanda District Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Godfrey Mbetegyereize acknowledged the residents’ concerns, describing access to security as a constitutional right.
He assured the community that relevant offices would be engaged to explore solutions, while urging vigilance and cooperation with local leaders in the interim.
Residents remain hopeful that the restoration of the police post will curb crime and restore a sense of safety in Irimya Parish.
