Man Killed by Collapsing Pylon Was a Trapped Vandal, Police Say
According to preliminary investigations, the deceased was part of a group attempting to cut the structure of a high-voltage power transmission tower linked to the Namawojolo sub-station.

A man who died on Wednesday, November 19, when a high-voltage electricity pylon collapsed in Nakapinyi Village, Kasenge Parish, Nama Subcounty, was a vandal trapped in the act.

Authorities say his identity is yet to be established, but his death could provide critical clues for tracking down other members of the group.

The act of vandalism also damaged a second tower about half a kilometre away.

“Preliminary findings indicate that the deceased was part of a group cutting the high-voltage tower structure (pyron). Identifying him will help us pursue the other suspects involved,” said ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy Public Relations Officer, Kampala Metropolitan Police.

A joint team of Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) and police officers have examined the scene, collected statements from residents, and taken photographs.

Police are working to safely retrieve the body for post-mortem examination while continuing efforts to identify and apprehend the remaining culprits.

Authorities warn the public against tampering with electricity infrastructure, noting that such acts are dangerous and illegal, and pledged to ensure the prosecution of all involved.
