Mityana – Two officials from the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) have been arrested in Mityana over allegations of extorting money from residents seeking national identity cards and birth certificates.
The suspects, identified as Mugimba Simon and Najjuko Harriet, are accused of demanding bribes for services that are meant to be provided free of charge by government.
Mityana Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Prossy Mwanjuzi, who ordered the arrests, condemned the practice, saying public servants who exploit citizens would face the law.
“National IDs and birth certificates are a right, not a privilege to be bought. Any government worker who exploits citizens in this way is breaking the law and will be dealt with accordingly,” Mwanjuzi said.
She warned other officials against commercializing government services, stressing that extortion and corruption would not be tolerated.
“Let this be a clear message: those caught abusing their offices will face the full force of the law. We are determined to protect Ugandans from exploitation,” she added.
Mwanjuzi also urged residents to report cases of extortion, noting that community vigilance is crucial in fighting corruption.
“Do not suffer in silence. If any official demands money for services that are meant to be free, report immediately so that we can act. Together we can fight this vice,” she appealed.
The arrests have been welcomed by residents, who say bribery had become widespread in Mityana.
“We are happy that action has been taken. For a long time, people here have been paying bribes to get IDs and certificates. Finally, we see government standing with us,” said a resident from Busimbi Division.
Police confirmed that the suspects are in custody and will be charged in court once investigations are complete.
