Police in Adjumani District are investigating two separate but possibly related arson incidents in Panyawe Village, Okangali Parish, Ciforo Sub-county, that left several homes damaged and families in distress.
The first attack occurred on the night of August 13, 2025, when unidentified individuals set fire to a grass-thatched house belonging to Christine Mazaakpe.
The suspects also attempted to burn another structure in the same compound, partially damaging a grass-thatched home owned by Joyce Mandrera, a relative of the first victim.
The second incident happened on August 14, 2025, at about 11:00 P.m., when unknown assailants set ablaze the grass-thatched house of Alex Droma, a 27-year-old peasant farmer. They also attempted to burn another house within his homestead.
"All the victims are relatives, and our preliminary findings indicate these incidents could be connected to ongoing family disputes," said SP Asea Collins, the Police Public Relations Officer for the North West Nile Region.
Police Scene of Crime Officers (SOCOs) who visited the site on August 15 found graffiti in the Madi language at Alex Droma’s home, alongside damaged household property including brooms, food supplies, and cooking utensils.
“These attacks were carried out during the late hours of the night, making it difficult for immediate identification of the culprits,” SP Asea explained. “We are following all leads to bring those responsible to justice and ensure the safety of residents.”
Authorities have appealed to the public for information that could help in apprehending the suspects.
“We urge the community to work with us by sharing credible information. Our officers are on the ground, and we shall update the public as investigations progress,” SP Asea added.
