An evening that began with laughter and guests ended in bloodshed in Lugonjo Nakiwogo, Entebbe, where David Mutaaga, 69, and his wife Deborah Florence Mutaaga, 62, were found brutally killed inside their residence.
The couple had hosted a small gathering earlier that evening, but by 10pm, an unknown assailant had reportedly breached the perimeter wall and fatally attacked them.
The victims were discovered with deep stab wounds, with one body found in the compound and the other inside the house.
Neighbours say they heard no screams or signs of struggle until police arrived later in the night.
The Mutaagas had returned to Uganda a year ago for retirement and were described by locals as reserved and peaceful. According to community leaders, the attack has no apparent motive — and no known enemies.
“This is a devastating and deeply puzzling crime,” said Zikuliza Paul, LC1 chairperson of Lugonjo Nakiwogo.
“There had never been any complaints or threats involving this family. They were private people.”
Police say they are treating the case as a suspected aggravated robbery and murder. Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson ASP Luke Owoyesigyire confirmed that officers recovered evidence from the scene and arrested two household workers — Nakalema Angel and Golooba Ronald — for questioning.
The housemaid, Naudo Daphne, and other neighbors have also given statements. According to police, a K9 unit was deployed, but the suspect evaded capture.
A postmortem at Mulago City Mortuary is expected to determine the precise cause of death.
“The motive is still unclear,” said ASP Owoyesigyire. “We are investigating every possible angle and urge the public to come forward with any useful information.”
Residents say the couple’s guests — around seven people — had left by 7pm, and nothing appeared unusual until news of the killings spread. Investigators are now working to trace who was present, whether anyone returned, and how the assailant gained access.
The killings have raised alarm in the area, with calls for tighter neighborhood security and more visible police presence.
For now, the Mutaagas’ home remains cordoned off — not just as a crime scene, but as a grim reminder of a violent mystery still unfolding.
