56-Year-Old Woman Murdered in Rukungiri

Rukungiri – A chilling murder has sent shockwaves through the residents of Rukungiri district, leaving many unanswered questions.

Mary Kakazi, a 56-year-old businesswoman, was found dead near an unfinished house at Kitojo Catholic Church in Kichwamba Cell, Karuhembe Parish, Kebison Sub-County.

The incident occurred on the night of February 7, 2025, with the body discovered the following morning by a local resident, Mangadarena Kizambire, who was on her way to her garden.

The gruesome discovery raised alarms, attracting other residents to the crime scene.

According to eyewitnesses, Mary Kakazi had been operating her bar at Bagarame Trading Centre in Rugorogoro Cell, Mabanga Parish, until around 8 p.m. on February 7.

Her neighbour, Joanitah Tusingwire, reported that Kakazi had closed her bar for the night and was heading home to sleep.

Kigezi police spokesperson Elly Maate confirmed the incident, stating that the police were alerted and a team of officers was dispatched to the scene. Evidence was documented and statements were collected from witnesses.

“The body was taken to Rwakabengo Health Center III mortuary for a postmortem examination,” Maate confirmed.

Maate also added that the Rukungiri police are currently searching for suspects, with investigations ongoing.

The community remains in shock, questioning the circumstances surrounding Kakazi’s murder and the identity of those responsible.

“We are working tirelessly to investigate the murder and bring the culprits to justice,” Maate added.
