Boda boda riders in Iganga Municipality have called on the government to allocate additional funds for the installation of security lights to curb the rampant cases of motorbike robberies.

The riders stated that criminals exploit the poor lighting on most streets in the municipality to target them, particularly during late-night hours. They believe that enhancing street lighting would significantly reduce such incidents.

"Most of these robberies happen because the streets are too dark. If we had more security lights, these cases would decrease," one rider explained.

The riders are also preparing to host President Yoweri Museveni at the Iganga District headquarters tomorrow, Saturday.

They marched through the streets of Iganga Municipality, led by the Iganga Youth Brass Band, to mobilise their colleagues to turn up in large numbers to welcome the president.

Hajji Abubaker Walubi, the NRM chairman for Iganga, noted that the mobilisation drive aims to ensure that boda boda riders attend the event and present their grievances directly to the president.

The Deputy Press Secretary to the President, Farouk Kirunda, revealed that they anticipate a turnout of over 20,000 boda boda riders at the event.

Resident District Commissioner Sadala Wandera praised the boda boda riders, highlighting that they were the only group selected to host the president during his tour of the Busoga sub-region this time.

President Museveni’s visit is expected to focus on addressing key issues in the region, with boda boda riders hopeful their concerns about security will be addressed.
