Two security guards rob over shs1bn  in cash-in-transit heist

Police have kicked off investigations into circumstances under which two security guards robbed over shs1b billion from a bullion van they were guarding.

According to Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, the robbery happened when the two guards  belonging to G4S Security Services Uganda Limited who had been deployed to guard a bullion van that was transporting cash robbed it and fled.

“The guards were escorting the vehicle registration number UAJ 199T  a box body transporting money from Lubowa to Nakasero and along the way, they stole the cash and abandoned the vehicle plus their two guns along Nabunya road in Rubaga division,” Owoyesigyire said.

Whereas details of the robbery are still scanty, Owoyesigyire said the two guns and empty van were recovered abandoned by Old Kampala Police.

He added that later, one of the guards, Richard Otim was later arrested and shs117 million was found with him.

Owoyesigyire said investigations into the incident continue as is the hunt for the second security guard.

Such cases of cash-in -transit heists are not common in Uganda.
