Police have said one of the masterminds of last week’s shocking attack on an Indian businessman in Kampala has confessed to participating in the robbery.
A disturbing video was last week shared depicting a gang riding on boda bodas attacking Mr. Joshi Keshav, a 32-year-old Indian national and tour and travel company operator based at Crown House, Kampala Road.
In the incident that happened around mid day at Eso Corner, the gang surrounded the Indian businessman before assaulting him and in no minute, his bag with a laptop ,mobile phone and cash shs150,000 were robbed.
However, according to police spokesperson, Kituuma Rusoke, following the incident, police tracked and arrested one Mubarak Sulaiman who confessed to his involvement in the robbery.
“He provided details about the planning of the crime, identifying one Ibra Kisenyi as the ringleader. Kisenyi was seen in the video footage wearing a white t-shirt and physically confronting the victim, accompanied by individuals known only by their aliases: Toofa, Ian, and Simple,” Kituuma said.
He said the suspect disclosed that after the robbery at Esso Corner, the same group proceeded to Sir Apollo Kaggwa Road, where they robbed a mobile money vendor of her bag containing an unspecified amount of cash.
“The local community attempted to intervene, leading to a pursuit that extended to Kazo Angola. During this chase, one of the suspects suffered an accident, resulting in his death at the hands of an enraged mob. The identity of the deceased has not yet been established, as Sulaiman did not recognize him.”
During interrogation, it was revealed that Ibra Kisenyi, Mubaraka, Simple, and Toofa had all been released from prison between March and July 2024.
Kisenyi has been linked to various criminal activities, including incidents at Acacia Avenue, City Oil, Bugolobi Junction, Mawanda Road, and the recent robbery at Esso Corner.
Despite the arrests of several suspects in these cases, Kisenyi remains at large.
All groups involved in these crimes utilize motorcycles and are known to operate in the Kitezi-Sayooni area near the garbage dumping site.
“We advise the public to refrain from carrying large amounts of cash. Fortunately, the victim had only a small sum on him, which mitigated the loss.”
Police condemned what they termed as apathy displayed by onlookers during violent attacks, highlighting the need for community vigilance and support in such situations.
