Police in Kampala have kicked off investigations into  circumstances under which a one year old baby  left under the care of a housemaid drowned in a basin of water that was being used to bath her.

Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire said the baby was being bathed by a 14-year-old maid when the incident happened in Katuso zone, Buziga parish in Makindye division.

The deceased’s parents, Peter Mubiru and Goretti Nakato had gone for work by the time the unfortunate incident happened.

“It is alleged that at around 5pm, the suspect Milly Nambuusi, 14, a maid was bathing the deceased in the basin and then that she moved aside leaving the child in water. Coming back shortly she found the deceased had fallen into the water and was too weak,” Owoyesigyire said.

According to police, the maid’s attention was taken when one of the neighbours called her, leaving the baby in the basin and by the time she returned, the unfortunate incident had already happened.

The maid would later call neighbours who helped her take the child to a clinic as they called the mother.

“The child was referred to Kirudu Hospital where the child was announced

dead The house maid was  later arrested and charged of murder SD 19/16/05/2024  and is currently detained at Kabalagala Police station.”

He added that the deceased’s body has been taken to Mulago City mortuary for postmortem.

Owoyesigyire said whereas investigations into the circumstances are ongoing, parents should be warned to be careful of the persons under whose care they leave their children .
